Job Summary

Th e Tape Librarian is responsible for the care, maintenance, and management of magnetic computer tapes and NAS/USB disks within the Tape Library. This role serves as a key resource for database-related tape library operations, ensuring accurate tracking, verification, and availability of media for internal users and external client deliverables. The Tape Librarian supports daily operations through coordination with computer operators, archive personnel, and IT teams while maintaining strict adherence to quality, security, and QHSE standards.

Job Description

  • Serve as the primary individual responsible for projects within the tape library.
  • Act as the primary focal point for the xmittal (transmittal) program.
  • Coordinate and manage all tape pools, including creating, expanding, or reducing pools and generating labels for all media.
  • Register, document, and catalog all incoming media.
  • Verify disks and tapes prior to outgoing client shipments.
  • Address and resolve media catalog issues for users and archive personnel.
  • Manage media error reporting by identifying and flagging soft and hard errors in the appropriate catalog systems.
  • Generate media and inventory reports as required by DMS and IT Data Processing teams.
  • Conduct database searches to locate media and coordinate retrieval activities.
  • Coordinate with Computer Operators to support daily tape library (silo) operations and media needs.
  • Load and eject media in tape silos using generated operational lists.
  • Retrieve, file, and sort media for internal departments, including Warehouse, Archive, and end users.
  • Retrieve, package, and box media for outgoing shipments.
  • Perform quality control checks, labeling, and filing of incoming media shipments.
  • Ensure proper care, handling, and storage of all computer tapes and related media.
  • Perform routine maintenance of the tape library.
  • Maintain and follow all established library work procedures and operating instructions.
  • Search for "not in rack" tapes and coordinate findings with the Supervisor.
  • Ensure compliance with all Quality Assurance procedures, QHSE requirements, and departmental working practices.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Group Leader or Supervisor.
S kills Required
  • Three to five (3-5) years of experience as a tape technician or in computer operations.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong knowledge of tape library operations and media handling procedures.
  • Proficient computer skills with a solid understanding of databases.
  • Working knowledge of MMS tape management systems.
  • Highly organized, disciplined, and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and perform effectively under time constraints.
  • Capable of training and supporting backup personnel.
  • Strong communication, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

  • High school diploma or equivalent
