Labor Relations Director

Travel Needed:
Up to 50% but can vary

Location:
Houston, TX

Position Summary:
The Labor Relations Director will play a key leadership role in developing, implementing, and managing labor relations strategies, policies, and initiatives to support Vestas' operational goals. This role will ensure compliance with labor laws, foster positive employee relations, and partner with senior leadership to mitigate labor-related risks. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in labor relations, collective bargaining, and workforce strategy in a complex, unionized environment.

Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Labor Relations Leadership
    • Develop and implement positive employee relations strategies that align with Vestas' business objectives and promote a collaborative and productive work environment.
    • Advise and train senior management on labor relations strategies, risk mitigation, and compliance with applicable labor laws and regulations.
    • Develop campaign response playbook and train response teams.
    • Lead collective bargaining processes, ensuring successful negotiation and execution of labor agreements.
  2. Collective Bargaining & Contract Management
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for union representatives during contract negotiations and grievance resolution.
    • Manage contract renewals, amendments, and related processes while maintaining positive labor relations with employees and union partners.
  3. Employee Relations & Conflict Resolution
    • Advance positive relationships between management, employees, and union representatives.
    • Develop and implement strategies and tools to proactively identify, mitigate, and respond to labor risks.
    • Address and resolve employee grievances and disputes effectively and in accordance with established policies and agreements.
    • Develop and deliver training for managers and supervisors on best practices in approachable leadership, labor relations and contract administration.
  4. Compliance & Legal Risk Management
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws, including the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and other applicable regulations.
    • Collaborate with the legal department to manage labor-related litigation, arbitration, and other legal matters.
  5. Policy Development & Implementation
    • Develop and implement labor relations policies and procedures that support organizational goals and comply with applicable laws.
    • Monitor industry trends and legislative changes, recommending updates to policies as needed.
  6. Data Analysis & Reporting
    • Conduct labor relations data analysis, including internal employee relations trends, grievances and arbitration outcomes.
    • Provide regular reports and insights to senior leadership to drive data-informed decision-making.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, Business Administration, or related field required.
  2. Master's degree or JD highly recommended.
  3. Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in labor relations or human resources, including 5+ years in a leadership role.
  4. Extensive experience with union avoidance.
  5. Extensive experience negotiating and administering collective bargaining agreements.
  6. Proven track record of successfully managing union relationships in a large, multi-site organization.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience in the renewable energy, manufacturing, or technology sectors.
  2. Certification in Labor Relations or Human Resources (e.g., SHRM-SCP, SPHR).
  3. Strong understanding of labor law, employment law, and regulatory compliance.
  4. Excellent negotiation, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills.
  5. Ability to develop and implement labor relations strategies aligned with business goals.
  6. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  7. Exceptional communication and leadership abilities.
